FBC: The Year Ahead by Tiong Tung Hui dated 28.12.14

Brother Tiong started by showing a picture of our building.  He said this building is useful but it is not the most important aspect of our church.  The important thing is you and I members of FBC which makes the body of Christ.

Thank You

Bro Tiong extended his personal thanks to everyone in our church.

  1. Especially those who prayed and even cooked for her sick mother
  2. To all the leaders, Pastor Malcolm, elders, Youth ministry leaders, Phaik Im, Chung Chek, Worship ministry, Paul, leaders of English literacy, Break Through, Hope Place, Prison ministry, Family ministry under Howe Tung & Chuei Lian, Salvation Army, Boys Brigade, and others.  His is thankful because they do not need to be there but they chose to be there to make a difference.
  3. Bro Tiong is thankful to Michael Wong, Chii Bing, and Paul who have the responsibility for the financial management of the church.
  4. He is thankful to all the members who have been giving generously.

On behalf of the leadership he asked for forgiveness in areas where leaders had not carried out duties in full satisfaction of members.  In a real sense leaders are not “leaders” but servants because they are here to serve.

History of FBC

We celebrated 40 years anniversary when we moved into this building.  Four years had passed.  Now we are 44 years old.

The church was established by Pastor Bob Evans in Green Road, in fact, at 131 Green Road.  All said it has been through faith that this church was established.  Faith is not cheap, Christ died for us.  Every missionary who came to our shore paid a price for us.  Faith is precious.

2014

Our country is very blessed.  Despite all the “ripples”, social ills, crimes, etc, but still we can enjoy worshiping as we like.

Many issues affected us in 2014, like “Allah” issue.  A pastor shared with Bro Tiong that this is not a big issue, it is a wake-up call for us.  We cannot take things for granted.

Around the world there are many crisis e.g ISIS killing many people, this is scary.  Yet we are not far.  Malaysians have joined ISIS.  Persecutions in Syria and Iraq are continuing and this is scary too.

In Malaysia we are experiencing serious flood in the East Coast of Peninsula.  More than one hundred thousand people are affected.

The oil price has declined.  Our country’s budget was based on USD100 per barrel, and now it has dropped to about USD60 per barrel.  What is the impact on our economy?  Dr. Tiong admitted that he is not an economist and he does not know the impact on Malaysia.

The ebola crisis in West Africa has killed about 200 health worker.  We are not far because there are many Malaysians working in the timber industry in Africa.

In our country we are facing Islamization, but we are not being political here, we are trying to understand whether the 10 points regarding freedom of our faith are real or not.  Sometimes they seemed real at times they do not seem to be real.

In the midst of the crisis let us look at our church.

Resolution 2015

  1. Personal

Joshua 24:15 “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”

In 2014 we are encouraged to read through the Bible in a year.  Let us continue to read if we had not achieved it yet.  We are asked to share Christ with at least 3 people in the year.  The members are encouraged to pray more.  Build relationship with each other with love and care.  Look out for people around us e.g visitors coming to our church.

  1. Life Group (LG)

Luke 12:48 “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.”

Bro Tiong encouraged everyone to join a LG.  We must join a LG so that we can know each other better, and also we can contribute to the body.  We come together in group like LG to do things that each individual may not be able to do.

The LGs are also encouraged to go out into the mission fields.  We also have the Short Term Mission that goes overseas.  But if we cannot go to mission overseas, at least we can do local mission like interior of Sarawak.  Even just outside Kuching there are many poor people living in horrible accommodations.  We can help some but may not be able to help all of them.  Bro Tiong shared that it was like the Star Fish story that we learnt in Alpha course.  At least the one star fish that was thrown into the sea can survive.

There are so many crisis and disasters, are these signs that Christ is coming back?  We got to be prepared.

Our Mission

To equip and empower every member of FBC in fulfilling God’s calling on their lives and the next generation on foundations of strong relationships.

To network and share resources with other churches in demonstrating compassion for the marginalized and the unreached in Sarawak and the nations, built on the foundation of the worth of each person.

These are not just pretty statements but are real action statements for our church.

We are committed

To be focused on Jesus Who is the centre of all we are and do

To be equipped and empowered by the Holy Spirit

To build strong and lively relationships

To have compassion for the lost

To have a Kingdom mindset

To serve

FBC

Ministry Training College (MTC)

In 2014 we have already established the MTC with 5 students.  More people may join next year.  We see MTC as important in training leaders to evangelise and impact others for Christ. We learnt this model from Shepherd Community Church, H.K with some modifications.

Boys’ Brigade (BB) & Girls’ Brigade (GB)

We are trying to impact the society around us, but how are we doing this?  One way is by the English literacy classes and now with have BB & GB which are school co-curriculum uniformed bodies approved by the Government.  Through the work of Pastor Malcolm, Brother Jong and Sister Agnes we are starting BB & GB in 2015.

Outreach

We are planning two outreach points, one in Demak Laut and another in Sebuyau Ensengei.

Demak Laut

We have rented a first floor shop lot at Demak Laut.  It is small and can accommodate about 50 to 60 people.  How this came about was that sometime ago Bro Tiong visited a sick brother, Unzi who had a stroke.  He lived in a container and it was very hot and stuffy.  Bro Tiong enquired why he had not been attending church, and UnJi said to attend church he has to decide whether to skip lunch because the cost of getting to our church is expensive for him to afford.  Bro Tiong realised that we can establish a outreach point in Demak Laut so that many can worship in a church.  We are going to start a BM service after some renovation work at the rented premise.

Sebuyau Ensengei

Since two years we have been in Sebayau about 200 members have been baptised but there is no place for worship.

We have been given a piece of land there and now we need a building.  To cut some cost our Brother Michael has come up with a concept ual design of three steel containers forming a building structure.  We hope to get this building up by first half of 2015.

Conclusion

Matthew 25:21

“Well done, good and faithful   servant”

The secular world’s definition of success is different from our Christian world view.  In the secular world, success means money, power, position and all the worldly things.

God’s measure of success is very different.  In God’s view, success is measured by our faithfulness.  We must be faithful to what we have been entrusted to, then we are successful in God’s eyes.

Rejoice, Pray & Give Thanks to God in Everything by Ho King Swee dated 21.12.14

In all circumstances

Many people are not thankful even for good things.  We failed to be grateful for many things.  But to ought to as commanded by God.
Luke 17:11-19 the story of the 10 lepers.  After they were healed only one out of ten came back to thank Jesus.  What happened to the 9 ?  If for good things we do not give thanks, for bad things certainly we will not give thanks.
1 Thes 5:6-18 give thanks in all circumstances.  We must do this in obedience to God.
Philippians 4:4-7 Rejoice always.  We must adopt this as a lifestyle. Rejoice, pray always, give glory to God.  Our joy does not depend on circumstances.  It is a choice, having the Holy Spirit in us. If we have the Holy Spirit, God will not ask us to do things we cannot do.  Joy comes from inside us.

1.       Introduction

1.1   Sufferings are inevitable
pressure (literally or figuratively):

The Grace of Giving dated 14.12.14

Introduction
God is engaged in the new building project moving from his old temple to his new temple, the focus is on Jesus – on his church. Jesus is described as the cornerstone and the new temple that is growing out from that cornerstone is central to God’s purposes – the church of God, the church of Jesus Christ.
The church of God is the people of God where God’s Kingdom is God’s people in God’s place under God’s rule enjoying God’s blessings.
The church of God is the new temple of God  – the fulfillment of his promises, to his people. God dwells within it. The new temple is served by his people – who are priests within that new temple. In the Book of Acts, priests like Joseph, also called Barnabas, a Levite – one of the priestly family – no longer serves in the old temple but serving instead in the new temple. Not serving by bringing animal sacrifices, but financial sacrifices – thank offerings to the holy God – in order that God’s new community in which God dwells might be the fulfillment of the promises that he has made.
Giving in the New Testament is in the context of nourishing and protecting the Body of Christ instead of giving in a system or to an organization. In the Old Testament, it is to fulfill a legal obligation.

5 marks of Christian giving:

1  The Essence of Christian giving is Grace
(Deuteronomy 8:17,18; 1 Corinthians 4:7; 2 Corinthians 8:1-5)

We give because God has so graciously lavished on us everything, not because God needs or for us to earn points to heaven. God does not need our money. God does not want our money. God demands our surrender.

2  The focus of Christian giving should be God’s family
(Galatians 6:10; 1 Timothy 2:3,4)

It’s good that we love our neighbor and to give to the needs of the world, but the focus of Christian giving should be first and foremost be God’s family.
As we look to the needs of Christian brothers & sisters around the world, we look also to the advance of the Gospel.

3  The issue with Christian giving is Stewardship
(John 3:27; Deuteronomy 8:17,18; 1 Corinthians 4:7; Luke 12:16-21; Matthew 25:14-30)

It is not really giving at all. The issue then is stewardship.
We have got what we have got because God has given it to us – God is the owner.
And the issue is how am I looking after it? Am I using it for his purposes or storing it away for mine. We are managers.

4  The benefits of giving are out of this world
(Matthew 6:19-21; 2 Corinthians 8:13-15; 9:6-11)

Jesus spoke of storing up treasures in heaven and using wealth to make friends. There is no credit crunch in the kingdom of God, when it comes to God’s work, moth & rust will not destroy.

We are enriched to give with the glorious joy of seeing the Gospel advance.

5  Every Christian should give
(Luke 6:38; Acts 20:35; 2 Corinthians 9:7)

God is a generous giver. That is his character. Every Christian should give in any number of different ways, not just financially – in time, in serving, gifts and skills and helping. But for the majority of us, will also be able to give financially.

Tithe
(Genesis 14:18-20; Deuteronomy 14:22-29; Luke 21:1-3; Romans 4:13; Galatians 3:17,18)

Abraham gave a tenth (tithe) to Melchizedek, the king of Salem, the priest of God Most High before the Law was given. Abram was blest then Abram tithed. Abram did not tithe to gain the blessing.
Later, it was given in the period of the Law for those who are under the Law. But now we are under what is known as the Law of Christ – the law of love and of grace – and we are to decide ourselves how to be generous.

Conclusion
God’s work done in God’s way will never lack any resources.

Evangelistic Cutting Edge by Dr. Thomas Chung dated 7.12.14

This sermon is seen in the light of:
  1. Evangelism
  2. Holy Spirit
  3. Discipleship
Background
  1. 1 Samuel 15 God instructed the Israelites to destroy the Amalekites including their animals. But they did not obey God instead some animals were kept.  Prophet Samuel asked Saul why some animals were kept, he replied that he wanted to make sacrifice to God.  But Samuel said to obey is better than sacrifice. 1 Samuel 15:18-19.
  2. King David transported the Ark of Covenant on a cart.  Once the cart was off balanced and Uzzah the Priest reached out to hold it but was struck dead by God.  This was because the Ark was supposed to be carried on poles not in a cart.  They have disobeyed God.
Yes, we may be doing God’s work, but are we doing in His ways?

  1. The Content of evangelistic message – it never changed, we are to discern what God wants us to deliver to the non- believers.
  2. Evangelistic methods can be modified according to needs.
  3. Evangelistic manifestations.
Roman 1:16-17 – the contents of evangelistic message.

1 Cor 1:17 – in sharing the Gospel it is not using techniques of the world the important message is the Cross.  Share the Cross and the Holy Spirit will be “excited”.

Vs 18 – the world says the Cross is foolishness but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Vs 20 – God made foolish the wisdom of the world.

Vs 22- the world look for signs and wonders, we preached Christ crucified.

The Story of the 10 lepers Luke 17:11-19

All the 10 lepers were healed but only one came back to thank Jesus.  There were ten converts but only one born again Christian.  Are we getting converts?  Are we giving the solutions or treating the symptoms?  Only the born again can enter heaven.  The job of evangelism is to get people into heaven.  It is not to get people near to heaven.

The Bible tells us the contents of evangelism is the Cross.  Is the message of the Cross relevant today?  To many they say no.  The Cross is the heart of evangelism.  To many the Cross is a stumbling block.  But if there is no Cross there is no salvation.  If there is no Cross we are only practising religion.

Key words about the Cross (for Salvation)(Romans 1:17)
  1. Righteousness of God – we cannot have righteousness from ourselves, it is from God.
  2.  Revelation – the Cross is the revelation of who God is.
  3. Through faith – faith open our minds to God.  Without faith we cannot come to God.
  4. Word of God – Words of God in the Bible.
