Awakening of the Heart by Song Ting Kee dated 30.11.14

Bro. Song based his sermon on the following verses:

Mark 4:35-41, Act 16:25-34, John 9:1-3.

Bro. Song started by sharing a little story about himself when he was a young student.  His teacher asked him what was his elder sister doing.  Bro. Song replied he did not know.  The teacher told him, “you are good for nothing!”.  He was very hurt, and till this day he still remembered this story.  How would you feel?

Story of Nick Vujicic

Nick was born without any limbs.  His grandparents and his parents were from former Czechoslovakia.  His grandparents were devout Christians.  When Nick was born, his mother did not want to see him because he was without limbs. She questioned why this happened to her?  However, both sets of Nick’s grandparents volunteered to take care of Nick.  As Nick grew and as a teenager he found life meaningless and he told his younger brother that he will commit suicide when he is 21 years old.  His father heard of his intention, and confronted him.  His father shared that he loves him and he will take care of him no matter what happened.  Nick than changed his mind.  By age 19 years he was baptized.  One day he was invited to a church to share and he saw a young boy just like him, without limbs.  The mother of this boy went and hugged Nick, telling him he is like the son she is going to have when her own son grew up.  Nick was touched and tears came.  His heart was awakened and he realized that he can make an impact on people’s lives.  Nick has been going around the world sharing his testimony of God’s love.  He has no limbs and yet can do so much, certainly with all our limbs we can doing something for others too.  God has plan for us Jeremiah 29:11

Salvation Army

Bro. Song and many of our church brothers and sisters have been helping the children at the Salvation Army by giving them tuition.  He shared the story of a girl who was very rebellious and did not want to cooperate with the teachers.  This was due to her broken family background.  Nevertheless, Bro. Song and the others showed their love for her and continue to teach her despite the difficulties.  Few years ago she came in number 30 in a class of 36.  But last year she came in 3rd!  Praise God.  Bro. Song and the others have been encouraging her and getting her to set subject grade goals, and she managed to achieve these goals.  Formerly when Bro. Song wanted to pray for her she refused, but through the years she has come to know Jesus and often asked for prayers.

Teachers Training College

Bro.  Song and Sis. Georgina are mentoring the teachers at the teachers training college.  They share the Gospel with them guide them and encourage them.  They will be the future “missionaries” when they are posted to the interiors.  Bro. Song also encouraged these teachers to teach the children at Salvation Army.  He found that many of these trainees found that they useful.  They also got trained while helping these children.

A school in Alaska

In this school the drop-out rate was 50% and that is very high.  To encourage the students to stay the school built a football field.  But Alaska is frozen most of the time and there was no grass, and the children had to play on hard ground.  A teacher heard about the plight of this Alaskan school, she took upon herself to raise thousands to build a proper field for this school.  As a result of her effort, the children there have a football field with artificial grass on it so that they do not have to play on hard ground.

Disability Camp

A girl of 12 years old was sent by her mother to a disability camp, but she refused to go fervently but her mother insisted of her going.  Finally she went.   As she stepped out of the bus a man with down syndrome came and hugged her.  She was surprised because she would not have done that with people she first met.  But this man showed her what is love.  During the camp, she was attached to this man and later she shared that she learnt so much from a person who is supposed to be a disable.  In subsequent years she volunteered herself at this camp.

Acts 25:23-26:32: Paul’s Testimony of the Risen Christ before King Agrippa by Gan Tuan Boon dated 16.11.14

Bro. Gan started with the story of the Commander of the King or Aram, Naaman.  He was a great commander but he had leprosy. He had a Jewish servant girl who convinced Naaman that if he seeks the prophet in Israel he will be healed.  Naaman got the King’s permission and he approached Prophet Elisha to heal him.  Elisha asked him to dip into river Jordan 7 times and he will be healed.  He did that and was healed.  Effectively he was saved by the testimony of a Jewish servant girl. ( 2 King 5:1-19 )

Paul’s Testimony of the Risen Christ before King Agrippa

900 years later a Jewish man appeared on the scene of Palestine.
Apostle Paul – A former Pharisee who became a believer
Porcius Festus – A Roman Governor who succeed Felix
King Agrippa and Bernice – Ruler of Galilee region and married sister Bernice
Main story line – Paul was on trial before King Agrippa for the “crime” of preaching the Gospel

12 years after Paul’s conversion he conducted 3 missions – 1st mission to the many provinces up to Turkey, 2nd mission, a historic crossed to Europe, and 3rd mission Paul extended his mission to Jerusalem.

In Jerusalem he was arrested by the authority when a mob tried to kill him.  Paul was transferred by the authority from Jerusalem to Caesarea because the Jews wanted to ambush and kill him.  He was tried before Felix who found nothing wrong with him.  Felix kept him in prison expecting a bribe.  Festus succeed Felix and Paul was again stand trial before him, and he found nothing wrong with him. Festus wanted to move Paul from Caesarea to Jerusalem to be trialled there but he objected and appealed to Caesar.  Festus has no charges against Paul and that was unreasonable to send him to Caesar. King Agrippa came along and Festus arranged for Paul to be heard before him.  King Agrippa was an expert in Jewish customs and culture and he would be able to help Festus with his duties in sending Paul to Rome.

Paul gave his conversion testimony before the King, Queen, Governor, high ranking military officers and prominent men of the city.

Part 1 – Paul acknowledge the presence of his audience with respectful remarks ( Act 26:1-3) he agreed that King Agrippa was an expert in Jewish customs and counted himself fortunate to appear before him.

Part 2- Paul’s life before conversion ( Acts 26:4-11) a) he lived as a Pharisee b) he was a persecutor of the church.

Part 3 – Paul’s conversion (Acts 26:12-19) a) he met Jesus on the way to Damascus b) he became a firm believer.  Jesus asked Paul why he persecute Jesus and told him it was hard to kick against the goad. A goad is a sharp stick for driving a ox forward.  It is painful for the animal to kick against it.

Part 4- Result of Paul’s conversion
a) he was appointed as witness of Jesus ( Acts 26:16 )
b) he received hope for the future. ( Acts 26:6-8) because he believed in the resurrection.
Isaiah prophecy about the Resurrection of the body. “But your dead will live, Lord; their bodies will rise— let those who dwell in the dust wake up and shout for joy” (Isa 26:19)
c) he obeyed the calling to spread the good news. (Acts 26:17-18)
         (i) Turn from darkness to light   ii) transferred from power of Satan to God.  Iii) received forgiveness of sin.

       Two Reactions to Paul’s Testimony

         a) Unbelief: Festus thought Paul was insane.
         b) Belief: Agrippa showed signs of believing.

Judgement of Paul’s Trial

        a) Paul had no done anything to deserve death or imprisonment.
        b) He could have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar.

Therefore Paul was sent to Rome to bring the good news.
How Beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news! (Rom 10:15)

Testimony by Catherine Elia dated 2.11.2014

Catherine shared with us her testimony of God’s work in their lives.  She shared that once we have Jesus in our heart we can give life to other people.  We will be directed by the Holy Spirit to share the Gospel with other people.  We show them and lead them to Jesus.  For her it is her attitude to share because she wants people to know Jesus.  All of us have opportunities to share with people.  When we share Jesus with people, let them speak and not to rush into sharing the Gospel because as we listen, the Holy Spirit will prompt us to share at the right time.  We are not to worry because the Holy Spirit will help us.  Do not be afraid to share, ask the Holy Spirit what it is that He wants us to share and the Holy Spirit will tell us.  She shared that she often walked in the park and seeking the Holy Spirit whom she should talk to and what to talk about.  She said usually people are more relax at the parks and they usually have more time.  That was where she shared with many people about Jesus.

At age 35 she personally encountered Jesus and she felt awesome power of God in her life.  She had a personal relationship with Jesus which changed her life.  Jesus had taken away all her sins by shedding His blood.  She received the Holy Spirit that now dwells in her.  No matter where she is the Holy Spirit is with her.  As a Christian she wanted to do the best she can.  We are better than people who do not know God, they do not have the Holy Spirit.  We do and we can do many things with His help.

In 1989, her husband Giancarlo, a very successful lawyer decided to give up everything to follow God.  His business partners were unhappy and he had to give 18 months grace period to leave the job.  However, during this 18 months both felt they did not hear God speak to them about what they were to do.  A Swedish friend suggested they go to Sweden to share what God’s impressed in their hearts.  What they shared was well taken.  Than they moved to America for two years, they shared in many churches and venue and they were also well taken.  However, they felt they wanted to return to the UK.  They went back but not many churches invited them to speak, so they went to Europe for some time.

She shared Matthew 6:31 “Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?”  Do not worry about anything, our heavenly Father knows everything.  Catherine shared all these 20 plus years they are in ministry they have been provided for and they have visited more than 40 countries. Earlier they did not know what to call their ministry, but finally they call it “Light to the nations”.

Once, she and her husband were in Austria, a Uganda man heard their preaching and invited them to Uganda and from there they went to Tanzania and other countries.  Catherine could not believe that she could take the poor living conditions in Africa, but she trusted God and went.  Her visits there turned up well!  In Africa people came by the thousands to hear them speak.  In these meetings they witnessed healings, the sick were healed, those who could not walk healed, the blind healed.  Most time, they did not pray specifically for these people.  The Holy Spirit was present and He healed them.

They ministered to people in churches are pastored by former addicts.  They can relate well with their congregations.  Catherine also ministered in the prison where there are many addicts.  But those who received Jesus were very fervent believers.  She could see in their worship and prayers.  In one case, she shared that a young woman addict was put in prison by her mother.  In an ordinary case, this was bad, a mother putting her child in prison but in this case it was a blessing as she became a believer and turned a new leaf!

She shared about how Jesus shed His blood and clean our sins.  She emphasised about His blood that cleansed us.  Many came to believe and receive Jesus in their hearts.  In another case, there was a Christian family who had a deaf and dumb child.  While sharing and praying, this child started to speak.  Catherine and her husband only learnt about this one year later when they visited this family.  So the Holy Spirit can heal even when we do not pray directly for the people.

In one visit they had a new friend who mistaken Giancarlo for a famous evangelist from Argentina. People were expecting this evangelist to speak but that was a mistake.  Nevertheless, Giancarlo spoke to them and many were touched.  Their friend apologized for his mistake and said perhaps they will speak in Argentina some time.  They do not have contacts in Argentina.  One day, they were sharing in Germany and someone asked whether they wanted to share in the prisons in Argentina, so they went.  Sometime people may prophesy we are to take note.

The presence of the Holy Spirit is with us.  We are not to worry what to say or do, seek the Holy Spirit for direction.  When we pray for people we trust God for healing and answered prayers.  Sometime we do not need to pray for people directly, the Holy Spirit can heal.

The Religious and Political Confrontations faced by Paul – By Dr. Thomas Chung dated 26.10.14

The Religious and Political Confrontations faced by Paul – By Dr. Thomas Chung dated 26.10.14
 Background
This sermon is based on Act 23. Acts chapter 23 is relevant to today’s Malaysian Church.  What were written than are also happening now in our country.  What happened to Jesus also happened to Paul.  In John 20:30 it was written that Jesus performed many miracles but only some were recorded.  Similarly for Paul he did many things and also performed miracles but only some of these were recorded. Why? This was because God used special stories to tell His people and also for the purpose of teaching His people.
At that time, the Church was in transition.  Paul was dealing with the Jews who believed in the Old Testament, and he had to deal with gentiles who were pagans.  Paul faced many challenges with the Jews who only believed in Old Testament carried many baggage whereas pagans were non- believers.
There are four sections to this sermon:
1.        V1-11 – Religious confrontation
2.       V12-22 – Religious Extremism
3.       V23-30 – Protection under the law
4.       V31-35 – Political corruptions ( also Ch.24:22-27)
Religious Confrontation – The Sanhedrin, the religious authority were controlled by Sadducees conflicted with Paul.  They were politically motivated and they did not believe in spirituality.  The Pharisees also conflicted with the Sadducees.  Paul was just testifying and not attacking anyone but the High Priest ordered him be stuck on the face.  Paul knew the different beliefs of the Sadducees and Pharisees, so he “played politics” with them. Because of this difference, the Pharisees sided with Paul and said they found him not guilty. There was an uproar and to protect Paul, the Commander put him in jail.
Religious extremism-forty Jews plotted to kill Paul.  Paul nephew knew of the plot and told Paul who in turn asked him to inform the Commander.  The Commander instructed his nephew to tell no one about this plot.  Paul was a Roman citizen.
Protection under the law-after knowing about the plot to kill Pau, the Commander ordered 470 soldiers to protect Paul as they proceeded to Caesarea.  Paul being a Roam citizen knew the law well, and under Roam law their citizens needed to be protected until proven guilty.  The Commander was well aware of Paul’s status and the importance to protect him for the trial. Paul was brought before Governor Felix. Actually Felix came from a slave family, but his brother manipulated and got him to be a ruler.  The Governor asked Paul he was from, and when Paul said Cilicia. The Governor ordered him to be put in jail.
Political corruption- Paul was brought to Antipatris and on to Caesarea.  He appeared before Governor Felix.  After the Governor learnt that Paul was from Cilicia he ordered him put into jail and will only hear him the following day.  Actually he was delaying hoping that Paul would offer him a bribe.  But none was offered.  In a way the Commander also passed his problem to Felix.

Important issues in Act 23
-Respect for law and authority.  Paul did not condemn the authority because he knew that the authority was appointed by God. Roam 13:1 spoke about this authority.  The perfect will of God applies here.
-Protection under the law- Paul was a Roam citizen and he knew his rights as a citizen.  He demanded that he be protected under such law.
-Perfect and permissive will of God.  In Luke 16:8 the parable of the unrighteous steward, God commended the unrighteous steward, and this can happen because of the permissive will of God.  In another example, Kin David eating the show bread which was reserved for the priests.
1 Corinthians 11:31-33 – do all to the glory of God.  Paul did not give offense to the Jews.  His concern was their salvation.

Paul’s Trip to Jerusalem by Ho King Swee dated 12.10.14

This sermon is based on Acts 21 to 22.
Bro. Ho has also subtitled his sermon as “Paul’s conviction”.
Conviction is a belief in something, not changing his mind, he is firm in his belief.
1. Paul returned from 3rd missionary journey 21:1-16
                a. The fellowship & ministry at Tyre 21:1-6
                b. The fellowship & ministry at Caesarea 21:7-14
                c.  To Jerusalem 21:15-16

2. The Lord protected Paul in Jerusalem 21:17-22:30
                a. Paul gave a report of the work of the Lord 21:17-19
                b. Paul took a Jewish vow 21:20-26
                c. Paul was arrested 21:27-40
                d. Paul spoke to the Jewish crowd 22:1-30
1. Paul returned from 3rd missionary journey 21:1-16
Was Paul right to insist to go to Jerusalem and be arrested?
a. The fellowship & ministry at Tyre  21:1-6
21:4 And having sought out the disciples, we stayed there for seven days. Through the Spirit they told Paul not to go on to Jerusalem.

b. The fellowship & ministry at Caesarea  21:7-14
21:10: While we were staying for some days, a prophet named Ag'abus came down from Judea.
11: And coming to us he took Paul's girdle and bound his own feet and hands, and said, "Thus says the Holy Spirit, `So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this girdle and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.'“
12: When we heard this, we and the people there begged him not to go up to Jerusalem.

Paul’s conviction
(1) Jesus’s words
Act 9:15  But the Lord said to him, "Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel.
Act 9:16  For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name."

(2) Paul obeyed the HS
Act 16:6  And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia.
Act 16:7  And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them.
Paul did not go to Asia and Bithynia

(3) Paul always listened to the HS
Act 19:21  Now after these events Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem, saying, "After I have been there, I must also see Rome."

Act 20:16  For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus, so that he might not have to spend time in Asia, for he was hastening to be at Jerusalem, if possible, on the day of Pentecost.

Act 20:22  And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, constrained by the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there,
Act 20:23  except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me.
Act 20:24  But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

(4) Confirmed by the Lord later:
(a) Act 23:11  The following night the Lord stood by him and said, "Take courage, for as you have testified to the facts about me in Jerusalem, so you must testify also in Rome."
(b) Act 27:23  For this very night there stood before me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I worship,
24  and he said, 'Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand   before Caesar. And behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.'

(5) Paul always kept clear conscience before God
(a) Act 23:1  And looking intently at the council, Paul said, "Brothers, I have lived my life before God in all good conscience up to this day."

(b) Act 24:16  So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man.

b. The fellowship & ministry at Caesarea  21:7-14

21:13: Then Paul answered, "What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be imprisoned but even to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus."
14: And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased and said, "The will of the Lord be done."

How could Paul fulfil Jesus’s will for him ?

c. To Jerusalem 21:15-16

Paul did not return to Antioch after the 3rd missionary journey but went to Jerusalem for the Pentecost festival

2. The Lord protected Paul in Jerusalem
     21:17 - 22:30
a.       Paul gave a report of the work of the Lord 21:17-19
                            b. Paul took a Jewish vow  21:20-26
1Co 9:22  To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.
1Co 9:23  I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.
                          c. Paul was arrested 21:27-40
                         d. Paul spoke to the Jewish crowd who wanted to kill him 22:1-30
Paul risked his life to bear witness for Jesus He loved Jesus & the Jews (Rom.9:1-3)!
3 Lessons we can learn:
Christ-centered Conviction –
Stay convicted on the Lord Jesus and His words and not moved by people or circumstances or anything else
Fellowship & ministry- .
Always seek to fellowship & minster with other believers.
Witness for Jesus –
       (a) always be willing to be all things to all men for the sake of the Lord & the gospel
       (b) always seeking opportunity to witness for Jesus.
Is your conviction on your life & calling Christ-centred ?
(built on the Lord Jesus and His words?)
Are you able to stand on the conviction irrespective of what is coming your way?
